Film production in Poland began in 1902 when a young engineer named Kazimierz Proszynski spent three years designing a camera he called a "pleograph," and began making short feature films. However, Poland was economically poor and politically subordinate at the time, and was unable to compete with foreign films such as France's Pathé, so film production made little progress. It began to get on track around 1908, and flourished from 2010 onwards, it is said, in large part due to the popularity of a new star, Barbara Apollonia Karpetz, who later became known in Hollywood as Pola Negri (hereinafter, proper nouns are often written in the film industry idiom, due in part to the fact that filmmakers were active outside of Poland).

ポーランドにおける映画の製作は，カジミエシュ･プロシンスキKazimierz Proszynskiという若い技術者が3年がかりで〈プレオグラフ〉と呼ぶカメラを設計し，1902年に短編劇映画をつくり始めたのが始まりである。しかし，当時のポーランドは経済的に貧しく，政治的に隷属国であったため，フランスのパテー映画をはじめとする外国に対抗できず，映画製作は遅々として発展しなかった。それが08年ころから軌道に乗り始めて10年以後に活況を呈したのは，のちにハリウッドでポーラ･ネグリPola Negriとして知られた新しいスター，バーバラ･アポロニア･カルペッツ(以下，固有名詞の表記は，映画人のポーランド国外での活躍などの事情もあり，しばしば映画界での慣用による)の人気によるところ大であったといわれる。
