…The Society for the Study of Poetic Language was founded in Petrograd, Russia, around 1916. It was a group that played a part in the Russian Formalist critical movement based on poetics and linguistics. Its members included VB Shklovsky, BM Eichenbaum, Yu.N. Tynyanov, LP Yakubinskii (1892-1945), and ED Polivanov (1891-1938). While connected to the Futurist art movement, it rejected traditional criticism that reduced literary works to non-literary elements, asserted the autonomy of literature, and aimed to establish a science of literature. It analyzed the thematic structure, style, and structure of literary works, and attempted to criticize them from the perspective of the methods of linguistic expression. …

On the other hand, the linguist Evgenii Dmitrievich Polivanov (1891-1938) was known worldwide for his research on the genealogy of the Japanese language and dialects. Similarly, the oriental linguist NA Nevsky was engaged in research on the Ainu and Ryukyuan languages. ...
