Records of salt tributes and documents on salt mines and salt pans in the Saidaiji Ryukicho indicate that salt production in the Sakaide region dates back to pre-ancient times. The Hyogo Kitakan Ship Arrival Register from 1445 (Bun'an 2) also indicates that a large amount of Sanuki salt was transported out of the area. Furthermore, during the period of large-scale population movement in the eastern Setouchi region in the early modern period, immigrants from Harima appear to have developed traditional iriyahama salt fields in Sakaide, Marugame and Muya. Early modern reclamation of iriyahama salt fields in Sakaide began with approximately 5 hectares of Gokushohama in 1787 (Tenmei 7). Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
