A bird of the family Anatidae in the class Aves. There is only one species in one genus and it makes up the subfamily Anseriinae. It is found in northern Australia and New Guinea. It is about 88 centimeters long. It has a bicolored body, with a long, slender neck, wings, tail, and thighs that are black, and the rest of its body being white. The skin is exposed from its yellow beak to near its eyes. It has long, yellow feet with small webbed feet. It builds nests in marshes where waterweed grows by knocking it down with its feet, and breeds in colonies, but also perches on trees to roost. It is entirely herbivorous, and likes to eat fallen waterweed ears. [Nagahisa Kuroda] [Reference] |Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
