A tool for cleaning teeth. Currently, the only thing commonly referred to as a "toothpick" is a "toothpick with a nail," but in the past toothbrushes were often called "toothbrushes," which shows that toothpicks were widely used to clean teeth. The custom of using a toothpick to clean teeth originated in India early on, where it was called "tandoka sezoku" in Sanskrit, which literally means "tooth stick" (Nankai Jiki Naipaden).
