...Korean politician. His pen name was Sa Ong. Born in Asan, Chungcheong Province. In 1881, he traveled to Japan as a member of a gentleman's tour group and studied at Nakamura Masanao's Dojinsha. In 1883, he returned to Korea as an interpreter at the American Embassy, and supported the Enlightenment Party. After the failure of the Gapsin Coup, he studied in Shanghai and the United States, and became a believer in the Methodist Church of South America. He returned to Korea in 1895 and served as an external and undergraduate advisor. In 1896, he participated in the coronation of the Russian emperor as an attendant to Min Young-hwan. He studied in France and returned to Korea in 1897.
