Akegawa-so - Akegawa-no-sho

Japanese:
Akegawa-so - Akegawa-no-sho
A manor in Arita County, Kii Province (present-day Shimizu Town, Wakayama Prefecture). Formerly the estate of the Minister of the Left, Fujiwara Nakahira, it was called Ishigakikamisho, but in 992 (Shoreki 3), it was purchased by the Right Minister Taira Korenaka, and in 1001 (Choho 3), it was donated to Shirakawa-dera Kita-in (later Jakuraku-ji). It is from around this time that the name Abi-gawa appears. During the time of Jakuraku-ji's second betto Tadanaka, the position of Kengyo was given to Sojo Gyoson, and the manor was established with Enman-in Monzeki of Onjo-ji Temple, which continued the lineage of Gyoson, as its head temple, and Jakuraku-ji Temple as its fief. The manor occupies the upper reaches of the Arida River, and although it is a vast one, most of it is mountainous, and cultivated land is limited to narrow river terraces or rice terraces in the tributaries.
