…After a fire (1176) in the Romanesque cathedral built in 1015, it was rebuilt; the transept was built between 1190 and 1240, and the nave between 1240 and 1275. The west facade, made of rose-colored sandstone from the Vosges Mountains and constructed under the direction of the master craftsman Erwin von Steinbach (c. 1244-1318) from 1277 onwards, is a masterpiece of the Gothic Rayonnant style.
