[Form (eidos) and matter (hyle)]
The Greek word eidos comes from the verb eidenai, meaning "to see," and is the same root as idea, meaning "something seen" or "shape," and was translated into Latin as forma. Hyle originally meant "forest," from which the meanings of "timber," "material," "material," and "substance" arose.
