Focal emphysema

Emphysema is classified into three types based on histological morphology: centrilobular emphysema, which is caused by the destruction and enlargement of the respiratory bronchioles in the center of the lobule; panlobular emphysema, which is caused by the destruction and enlargement of the alveolar passages and alveolar sacs; and focal emphysema, which occurs in an isolated area around a scar or under the pleura.

The majority of clinically observed emphysema cases are in middle-aged and elderly people who are heavy smokers, and are more common in men, with a centrilobular pattern.
