[1] ⇒ Karai Senryu (Erai Senryu) [2] [Noun] (Abbreviation of "Senryu Ten") Arose in the mid-Edo period, and is a form of short poetry that uses witty expressions based on 17 syllables to sharply capture human affairs, customs, and social conditions. It originally derived from the " maekuzuke " of haiku, but after Genroku ( 1688-1704 ), there was a demand for independent tsuku, which expanded the qualities of humor, playfulness, and riddles rather than flavor, and many anthologies of tsuku that could stand alone and be appreciated were published, leading to the new human affairs and customs poems. Around the Kyoho period ( 1716-36 ), "mankuawase" (a collection of 10,000 verses) in response to questions posed by judges became popular in Edo, and the name "senryu" was born from the fact that the judge, Erai Senryu, was a representative figure of this style. During the Bunka and Bunsei eras (1804-1830 ), this was also called a "mad verse."
