Odenmacho - Odenmacho

Japanese:
Odenmacho - Odenmacho

A district at the northern end of Chuo Ward, Tokyo. The name of the area remains Nihonbashi Odenmacho today. It borders Nihonbashi Kodenmacho and Nihonbashi Bakurocho to the north, Nihonbashi Yokoyamacho and Higashi Nihonbashi to the east, Nihonbashi Honcho to the west, and Nihonbashi Horidomecho and Nihonbashi Tomizawacho to the south. Edo-dori runs between Odenmacho and Kodenmacho, and is served by the Tokyo Metro Hibiya Line. Due to its proximity to Nihonbashi, it once served as the gateway to Edo, with kimono wholesalers, cotton wholesalers, and inns lining the streets, and it was a bustling place with the comings and goings of people and horses. The name of the area comes from the fact that a denma-yaku (transport company) was stationed here to transport luggage in the early Edo period. The prosperity of that time has been passed down to the present day, and the area functions as a wholesale district. In addition, the area around Kodenmacho's Jisshi Park is the site of the Edo Period's Tenmacho Prison, and there is a monument to Yoshida Shoin, who was executed here. The Toki no Kane (Bell of Time) was also moved from Kokucho to Jisshi Park and is known as the "Ishicho Toki no Kane (Bell of Time)."
