Jinsai Studies

Japanese: 仁斎学 - じんさいがく

A system of thought established by the Confucian scholar Ito Jinsai (1627-1705) in the early Edo period. It is also called Kogigaku in terms of its ideological goals, and Horikawagaku in terms of the place of its establishment. It can refer to Jinsai's personal philosophy or to the philosophy of a school of thought. For a long time, the two were thought to be the same. However, as research progressed comparing the manuscripts of Jinsai's writings with the published versions revised and published by his son Ito Togai and other disciples, differences between the two became clear. Here, I will discuss it as Jinsai's personal philosophy.

江戸前期の儒学者伊藤仁斎(1627‐1705)が築いた思想体系。思想的目標からみて古義学，成立場所からみて堀川学ともいう。仁斎個人の思想をさす場合と，学派としての思想をさす場合とがある。長らくこの両者は一致しているものと考えられてきた。しかし，仁斎の書き残した著書の稿本と，子息の伊藤東涯ら門人たちがそれに手を加えて出版した刊本とを比較する研究が進むにつれて，両者の相違が明らかになった。ここでは仁斎個人の思想として述べる。
