...Among the new residents, the serviçais are migrant workers from Angola, Mozambique, and the Cape Verde Islands. The tongas are second- and third-generation serviçais who were born on the island. The Portuguese once numbered 4,000, controlled 80% of the island's land, and operated coffee, cacao, coconut, and oil palm plantations, but the majority of them returned to their home countries at the time of independence, and only a small number remained on São Tomé.
