At the age of 16, he began writing for several London newspapers, including Young Hawk's Budget. The following year, he became assistant editor of Youth. In 1884, he became a reporter for the Bicycling News, run by William Iliff. In 1887, he tried to publish a low-cost book with W. Darger and Bill Carr, but it failed. In 1888, he launched Answers to Correspondents, a 12-page, 1-penny daily paper that answered readers' letters. The following year, he offered a prize of 1 pound a week for life to anyone who could guess the total amount of gold and silver in the Bank of England, which led to a sudden increase in circulation.
