《Answer to Correspondents》

At the age of 16, he began writing for several London newspapers, including Young Hawk's Budget. The following year, he became assistant editor of Youth. In 1884, he became a reporter for the Bicycling News, run by William Iliff. In 1887, he tried to publish a low-cost book with W. Darger and Bill Carr, but it failed. In 1888, he launched Answers to Correspondents, a 12-page, 1-penny daily paper that answered readers' letters. The following year, he offered a prize of 1 pound a week for life to anyone who could guess the total amount of gold and silver in the Bank of England, which led to a sudden increase in circulation. In 1894, he bought the bankrupt London Evening News and got it back on track.
