This is an old town in Sanbu County, occupying the central part of the Kujukuri Plain in the central south of Chiba Prefecture. The central town of Oami has been a market town since early modern times, where the Sotobo Line and Togane Line branch off, and many people commute to Chiba City. Rice, vegetables, tobacco, mulberry trees, and other crops are cultivated. Food processing is the main industry, and clams and other species are also cultivated. The town suffered damage in the Great East Japan Earthquake. In January 2013, it became a city, becoming Oami Shirasato City. 58.06 km2 . Population: 50,113 (2010). 千葉県中南部,九十九里平野中部を占める山武(さんぶ)郡の旧町。中心市街大網は近世以来の市場町で,外房線と東金(とうがね)線が分岐し,千葉市への通勤者が多い。米,野菜,タバコ,桑などの栽培を行う。工業は食品加工が主体。ハマグリなどの養殖も行う。東日本大震災で,町内において被害が発生。2013年1月市制施行,大網白里市となる。58.06km2。5万113人(2010)。
