[Definition and Usage]
The word "feudal" originally referred to the state system of the Zhou Dynasty in China, but in modern Japanese academic terminology, the term "feudal system" is rarely used in this sense, and has been repurposed as a translation of the European term "feudalism." The terminology used in this latter sense is also not consistent among scholars, and to put it bluntly, each scholar uses the word in a slightly different sense. However, if we ignore minor differences and look at it macroscopically, we can roughly distinguish the following four conceptual types.
