〘noun〙① During the Heian period, a boarding house set up by each clan so that students from Daigaku-ryo could live and study together. School building. *Yomihon Harusame Monogatari (1808), Kaizoku: "The school building is a land of squalor , a place of frozen syrup, he lamented, but his heart was not in it." ② During the Edo period, a place in a temple where monks study. Examples include Danjoji Temple and Kan'eiji Temple. Danrin (a temple for Buddhist monks) . Dansho (a temple for Buddhist monks). Gakurin (a temple for Buddhist monks). *From Haikai and Ku Kyodai (1694), "At my feet the rapeseeds lie, the mustard flowers (ginkgo), tea is boiled and passed around at the school building of Tonase (Basho)." ③ A place where students study and live at a private academy or school. Gakujuku. ※Ukiyo-zoshi, Koshoku Seisui-ki (1688), vol. 4: "I never left the school for three years."
