Kana zoshi. 2 volumes in 2 books. Author unknown. Published in the 1620s. One day, Sonobe Emon, who lives in the village of Fukakusa, visits Kiyomizu-dera Temple and falls in love with Usuyuki. With the help of a maid, he sends her a love letter, and the two begin exchanging letters. After a series of love letters that draw on many pre-medieval love stories, the two fall in love, but Usuyuki dies of an illness while Emon is traveling. In despair, Emon becomes a monk and retires to the world, living a life of firm faith until he dies at the age of 26. The story unfolds in accordance with medieval tales and cannot be said to reflect the times of the early modern period, but the idea of having most of the story consist of an exchange of letters is new, and it marks the beginning of the epistolary novel that was popular in the early modern period. At the same time, the work's enlightening content, which summarized many of the famous love stories from before the Middle Ages in simple terms, played a role in forming the common sense of culture of people in the early modern period, and as it was a work that was read throughout the Edo period, it has had a great influence on later generations.
