A phenomenon in which a sudden change in pressure caused by a sudden change in flow velocity in a pipeline becomes a pressure wave (water hammer wave) and propagates through the pipeline. It is also called the water hammer phenomenon. Water hammer waves are generated when valves or pumps attached to a pipeline are suddenly operated. The pipeline can be destroyed by the increase in pressure caused by water hammer. Measures taken against water hammer include not operating valves or pumps suddenly and installing surge tanks (pressure regulating tanks) in the pipelines.
