Digestion is the process by which organisms break down macromolecules such as proteins, fats, and carbohydrates that they take in as food into smaller molecules that can be absorbed.

Fermentation, an enzyme reaction outside the body, gave rise to the concept of fermentation early on. Digestion is also an enzyme reaction, but since it is a reaction inside the body, it was seen as more of a transformation of vital energy.
