...Eventually, the distinction between the object of dhikr, the subject of dhikr, and the act of dhikr disappears, and God, the object of dhikr, completely overwhelms and encompasses the subject's mind, leading to a state of ecstasy in which one is completely unaware of oneself. This is the mystical experience of union known among Sufis as fanā' (annihilation). It is a kind of experience of contact with God himself.
