Chlamydia psittaci (English spelling) Chlamydia psittaci

…In 1879, Swiss physician D. Ritter first described pneumonia in humans who had come into contact with tropical birds. Later, in 1895, French physician A. Morange confirmed that parrots were the vectors of the disease, and named it psittacosis, from the Greek word psittakos (parrot). The causative agent was previously considered a virus, but it has recently been reclassified as a bacterium, called Chlamydia psittaci , due to its large size (250-400 μm ), cell wall, binary fission growth, and sensitivity to antibiotics that act on bacterial enzymes. This bacterium is also found in about 90 species of birds other than parrots, including pigeons, ducks, chickens, pheasants, and turkeys, so the more accurate name for the disease is ornithosis. …
