In 1389, Margrethe I, regent of Denmark and Norway, was elected regent of Sweden. With the support of the Swedish nobles, she captured Albrecht of Mecklenburg (c. 1340-1412) of Sweden at the Battle of Falköping, and became the de facto ruler of the three kingdoms. In 1397, the nobles of the three countries elected the first common monarch of the three kingdoms at Kalmar Castle near the Danish border in Sweden, and 15-year-old Eric VII of Pomerania, grandson of Margrethe's sister, became king of the three kingdoms.
