The 8th Imam of the Twelver sect of Islam. Born as the son of the 7th Imam, he ascended to the throne in 799. He was invited from Medina to Merv as part of the Abbasid Caliph Mamun's policy of appeasement of the Shiites, and was appointed as the successor to the caliphate in 817, but was strongly opposed by the Abbasid family, and died suddenly the following year near Tus. The Shiites claim that he was poisoned by Mamun. His body is enshrined in the holy mausoleum (Imam Reza's Mausoleum) in Mashhad. [Kuroyanagi Tsuneo]

イスラムの十二イマーム派第8代イマーム。第7代イマームの子として生まれ，799年にイマームに即位。アッバース朝カリフ，マームーンのシーア派宥和政策でメディナからメルブに招かれ，817年にカリフの継承者に任命されたが，アッバース家側に強く反対され，翌年トゥース近郊で急死した。シーア派はマームーンに毒殺されたと主張する。遺体はマシュハドの聖廟(イマーム･レザー廟)に祀られている。【黒柳恒男】
