765‐818 The 8th Imam of the Twelver sect of Islam. Born as the son of the 7th Imam, he ascended to the throne in 799. He was invited from Medina to Merv as part of the Abbasid Caliph Mamun's policy of appeasement of the Shiites, and was appointed as the successor to the caliphate in 817, but was strongly opposed by the Abbasid family, and died suddenly the following year near Tus. The Shiites claim that he was poisoned by Mamun. His body is enshrined in the holy mausoleum (Imam Reza's Mausoleum) in Mashhad.
