Dicotyledonous plants include about 650 genera and 18,000 species. They are the third largest family of seed plants after the Asteraceae and Orchidaceae, and are related to the Rosaceae (Figure). Legumes are erect or climbing woody or herbaceous plants, many of which have root nodules, and grow using atmospheric nitrogen fixed by rhizobia in the nodules as nutrients.
