A turnout is a piece of equipment that allows vehicles on a track to switch to another track or cross over another track, and is generally divided into ordinary turnouts and special turnouts. Ordinary turnouts include single-leaf turnouts that switch off from a straight line, double-leaf turnouts, distribution turnouts, and inner and outer turnouts that switch off from a curve, while special turnouts include over-pass turnouts, multiple turnouts, and diamond crossings.
