Silk and cotton interwoven fabric. Generally, thin silk threads are used for the warp and two thick cotton threads are used for the weft, resulting in a five-ply satin weave. Patterns are woven with twisted silver threads or silk wefts. Silk and cotton interwoven fabrics are also widely woven in China and India, but they were imported to Japan from China during the Yuan and Ming dynasties along with brocade from around the Kamakura period. Old examples of this can be seen in the rags used for the inner lining of lacquer-painted hand boxes believed to have been made in the Kamakura period, and in the trousers made for bugaku costumes handed down to the Amano Shrine at Mount Koya.
