…The northern end of the Samaritan Mountains, Mount Carmel al-Karmal, juts out into the Mediterranean Sea, and created the ports of Akka (Acre) and Haifa. The Galilee Mountains (Jibāl al-Jalīl) at the northern end of Palestine are connected to the Lebanon Mountains to the north, and cities such as Safad and Nazareth were born in the Galilee Mountains. Southern Palestine, further south from the Judean Mountains, forms a large triangle jutting into the Gulf of Aqaba in the Red Sea, like the tip of a sword or the butt of a gun. This part is the Negev Desert, which continues directly into the Sinai Desert to the west, and to the east it faces the wilderness of the Sharaf Mountains in southern Jordan, across the part of the Jordan Rift Valley south of the Dead Sea, i.e., the Wadi al-'Araba. …
