A scholar of the Qing Dynasty in China. Born in Jiangdu, Jiangsu Province. His courtesy name was Rongfu. He lost his father at the age of seven and continued to study hard, becoming a student at Jiangdu County School at the age of 20. He then traveled around the country relying on his writing, and became acquainted with Zhu Yun and Wang Niansun, which opened his eyes to the study of textual evidence. He was eventually recognized as a Jiangsu scholar and became a congregational scholar, but because his mother was elderly, he did not enter the government, instead devoting himself to his studies and writing. In his later years, he worked on the revision of the Siku Quanshu, and died suddenly while working on it. He was a man of deep filial piety and friendship, but on the other hand, he was single-minded and uncompromising, and was sometimes treated as a madman. He devoted himself most to the study of textual evidence in the classics, and his representative works include the Inner and Outer Chapters of Shuxue, and he also reevaluated Mozi, which had long been ignored. He was also an excellent writer, and his masterpieces include "Ai Shio Senbun," which describes the state of a great fire, and "Kyokyuen Toumamori Shinbun," which mourns a prostitute. His other works include "Kōryō Tai," "Kōryō Tsūten," "Shakufu Kaigi," and "Mozi Xu."

中国,清の学者。江蘇省江都の人。字,容甫。7歳で父を失い苦学を続け,20歳で江都県学付生となった。その後文筆を頼りに各地を旅行し,朱 筠 (しゅいん) ,王念孫らと交わって,考証学に目を開いた。やがて江蘇提学使に認められ貢生となったが,母が老身だったので仕官はせず,学問,著述にうちこんだ。晩年は『四庫全書』の校定に従事し,その仕事中に急死した。孝心,友情の深い人柄であったが,一面,一本気で妥協性がなかったため,狂人扱いされたこともある。古典の考証研究に最も力を入れ,『述学』内外編がその代表的著述で,また久しく無視されてきた『墨子』を再評価するなどした。文章にもすぐれ,大火のありさまを描いた『哀塩船文』,妓女をいたむ『経旧苑弔馬守真文』などが傑作とされる。ほかに『広陵対』『広陵通典』『釈服解義』『墨子序』など。
