Wang Zhong (English spelling)
Born: 1744
[Died] 1794
A scholar of the Qing Dynasty in China. Born in Jiangdu, Jiangsu Province. His courtesy name was Rongfu. He lost his father at the age of seven and continued to study hard, becoming a student at Jiangdu County School at the age of 20. He then traveled around the country relying on his writing, and became acquainted with Zhu Yun and Wang Niansun, which opened his eyes to the study of textual evidence. He was eventually recognized as a Jiangsu scholar and became a congregational scholar, but because his mother was elderly, he did not enter the government, instead devoting himself to his studies and writing. In his later years, he worked on the revision of the Siku Quanshu, and died suddenly while working on it. He was a man of deep filial piety and friendship, but on the other hand, he was single-minded and uncompromising, and was sometimes treated as a madman. He devoted himself most to the study of textual evidence in the classics, and his representative works include the Inner and Outer Chapters of Shuxue, and he also reevaluated Mozi, which had long been ignored. He was also an excellent writer, and his masterpieces include "Ai Shio Senbun," which describes the state of a great fire, and "Kyokyuen Toumamori Shinbun," which mourns a prostitute. His other works include "Kōryō Tai," "Kōryō Tsūten," "Shakufu Kaigi," and "Mozi Xu."
