The first periodical in magazine form is said to have been Erbauliche Monaths Unterredungen (1663-68), founded by the Hamburg theologian and poet Johann Rist. This was followed by the French writer Denis de Sallo's Journal des sçavans and the English Royal Society's Philosophical Transactions, both published in 1665.
