Ekur

...Located in the northern part of the ancient Sumerian region, it appears to have already developed into a city by the Uruk period in the second half of the 4th millennium BC. As it was the site of Ekur, the temple of the supreme Sumerian god Enlil, it was revered as a sacred place and played a unique role in the political history of the 3rd millennium BC. Numerous clay tablets related to Sumerian literature written during the Babylonian First Dynasty in the early 2nd millennium BC have also been excavated here.
