Siberian Expedition - Siberian Exploration

The first scientific expedition to Siberia was undertaken by the German scholar Daniel Gottlieb Messerschmidt (1685-1735), who was sent to Siberia by order of the Russian Tsar Peter I, mainly to study medicinal plants and minerals. He travelled from 1719 to 1727, travelling all the way to the Lena River, collecting specimens of flora, fauna and minerals as well as 20 linguistic documents, and leaving behind a detailed diary of his research. In 1721-22, he was accompanied by the Swedish officer Strahlenberg, who had been a prisoner of war in Siberia, and later wrote The North-East of Asia and Europe (1730).

最初の学術的シベリア探検は，ロシア皇帝ピョートル1世の命により，主として薬草と鉱物の調査のためにシベリアに派遣されたドイツ人学者メッサーシュミットDaniel Gottlieb Messerschmidt(1685‐1735)によって行われた。彼は1719‐27年，レナ川までの各地を旅行し，動植物や鉱物の標本のほか20の言語資料を集め，くわしい調査日記を残した。1721‐22年，シベリアで捕虜になっていたスウェーデン人将校ストラーレンベルグが彼に同行し，後に《アジアとヨーロッパの北東部》(1730)を著した。
