Iwata belt

A belly band worn by pregnant women. The term Iwata obi was only recently introduced to the general public, and it was only used by a select few, and was generally called simply obi or hara obi. It is a widely held custom to tie this on the day of the dog in the fifth month, but there are also many regions where it is tied in the sixth or seventh month. Historically, it is said to have existed since the Heian period, and while only its physiological effects have traditionally been discussed, the significance of this obi seems to have been more spiritual and religious, and the period of taboo associated with pregnancy begins when the obi is tied. It was also the time when pregnant women themselves began to live a cautious life with modesty in all aspects of their lives. There were many taboos regarding daily activities and foods that had been passed down since ancient times, and people had to refrain from visiting shrines and other events.

妊婦が身に着ける腹帯のこと。岩田帯の語が民間で使われるようになったのは新しく、かつ一部の人々に限られていたようで、一般には単にオビとかハラオビとよばれていた。これを締めるのは、5か月目の戌(いぬ)の日というのが、広く行われている習慣であるが、6か月、7か月目に締めるという地域もかなりある。歴史的には平安時代からあったとされ、従来生理的効果だけが取り上げられているようだが、この帯の意義はむしろ精神的、信仰的な考え方が強かったようで、妊娠の忌みに入るのもこれを締める時期からである。妊婦自身が生活のすべての面に慎みの心をもって注意深い生活に入る時点でもあった。昔から言い伝えられた日常生活のなかの行為や、食物の禁忌も多かったし、神詣(もう)でなども遠慮しなければならなかった。
