In a broader sense, it often refers to incidents caused by the relationship between ancient Greece and the Achaemenid Empire of Persia, or conflicts between Christian and Islamic countries in medieval Europe. For example, in Éduard Driault's "The Eastern Question: From its Origin to the Treaty of Sèvres 1920" (1921), the first chapter is titled "Byzantium and Istanbul" and explains the Eastern Question from a description of the decline of the Byzantine Empire and the rise of the Ottoman Empire.
