...The false espionage accusations that divided French public opinion from the late 19th century to the early 20th century began in December 1894 when a military court sentenced Alfred Dreyfus (1859-1935), an artillery captain attached to the General Staff, to be stripped of his rank and exiled for leaking military secrets. The handwriting of a secret sales document obtained from the wastebasket of Schwarzkoppen, the German military attaché in Paris, was determined to be that of Dreyfus, but the basis for his conviction was actually provided by a secret document that had been secretly submitted.
