Born: January 26, 1902, Tokyo [Died] January 25, 1991. Tokyo critic. Pen names include Sato Koichi, Tanimoto Kiyoshi, and Furukawa Soichiro. Graduated from the Russian department of Tokyo School of Foreign Languages in 1923. Studied in the Soviet Union from February 1925 to November of the following year. After returning to Japan, he became a member of the Literary Front (1926). In 1927, he established himself as a leading theorist of the Marxist literary movement with his works Modern Japanese Literature and the Proletariat and Criteria for Marxist Literary Criticism. In works such as The Road to Proletarian Realism (28) and The New Tasks of NAPF Artists (30), he preached a literary theory that prioritized politics toward the "establishment of communist art," and led the revolutionary reorganization of NAPF into KOPF. He was arrested in 1932 for violating the Peace Preservation Law, and released in 1940 for not changing his views. After the Second World War, he founded the New Japan Literary Association (46) with Shigeharu Nakano and Yuriko Miyamoto, and led the reconstruction of the proletarian literary movement as a member of the Central Committee of the Japanese Communist Party. His other works include "Art Theory" (32), "Literary Theory" (50), "National Culture and Literature" (55), and "Thoughts on Literature" (72).
