The word opera comes from the Italian opera (plural of the Latin opus), which means "work" or "action." What should have been called opera in musica (musical work) or opera scenica (staged work) came to be called opera as an abbreviation. In the past, it was also called favola in musica (story in music) or dramma per musica (drama in music). In Japan, it is translated as "opera."
