…In July 1938, he escaped Germany to escape persecution by the Nazis, and went into exile in Sweden via the Netherlands and Denmark. When he received news from Hahn, who was continuing his experiments in Germany, that radioactive barium had been detected in the products of neutron irradiation of uranium (1938), he and his nephew Otto Robert Frisch (1904-1979) proposed the concept of nuclear fission in 1939 using the liquid-droplet model of the atomic nucleus proposed by N. Bohr to elucidate the production of barium. During World War II, he refused an invitation to participate in research on the development of the atomic bomb and worked at the Nobel Institute, retiring in 1947. …
