Business Enterprise in its Social Setting

…In 1949, the Center for Entrepreneurial History was established as an interdisciplinary research organization by specialists in economic history, sociology, business administration, and other fields, led by A.H. Cole (1889-1974), also of Harvard University. Entrepreneurial history, which focuses on the elucidation of entrepreneurship, i.e., the performance of entrepreneurs and managers and the social meaning of their activities, developed as a new trend in business administration, different from the narrow definition of business history by Glass and others. The results of the research conducted by the Center, which continued to operate until 1959, were published in the journal Explorations in Entrepreneurial History, and the culmination of this work was published in Business Enterprise in its Social Setting (1959) by Cole. The greatest feature of entrepreneurial history is that it attempts to consider the development of business management in relation to the unique ways of thinking and acting (cultural factors or cultural structures) of each country's society, and it also had a major impact on economic development theory. …
