The capital of County Louth in the northeast of the Republic of Ireland. It is located 80 km north of Dublin, at the mouth of the Castletown River which flows into Dundalk Bay. Population: 27,399 (2002 census preliminary figure). It is a key location for rail and road transport, and also has a port. It is home to the worsted wool textile industry and the Guinness beer brewery. After Henry II (reigned 1154-89) conquered Ireland, it became the base of control as a town "within the English fence".
