The word asthma comes from Greek and means "gasping." Hippocrates had already written about asthma, in which he stressed the importance of psychological factors, saying, "If you get asthma, calm your anger." The character "asthma," as used in Japanese today, can be found in the oldest medical texts in China, "Suwen" and "Lingshu" ("Huangdi Neijing").
