Wang Guai (English spelling)

Japanese: 王概 - おうがい（英語表記）Wáng Gài

A Chinese painter of the early Qing dynasty. His birth and death years are unknown. He was from Xiushui (Jiaxing, Zhejiang Province). He was active in Nanjing during the Kangxi period (1662-1722). His first name was Kai, and his style name was Anjie. He studied landscape painting under Gong Xian, and excelled in painting pine and stone. He had a wide circle of acquaintances, including Zhou Lianggong, and was known as "the greatest enthusiast in the world." He created the first volume of the Mustard Seed Garden Painting Guide (1679), a manual on landscape painting techniques, and then, together with his brother Wang Pei and his younger brother Wang Peng, he compiled the second and third volumes (1701), which included paintings of orchids, bamboo, plums, and chrysanthemums, flowers and birds, and grass and insects.

中国，清代初期の画家。生没年は不明。秀水(浙江省嘉興)の人。南京で康熙年間(1662‐1722)に活躍した。初名は丐（かい）。字は安節。龔賢（きようけん）に山水を学び，また松石図を得意とした。周亮工をはじめ，金陵派の画家たちと交際が広く，〈天下熱客〉と称される。山水画の技法書《芥子園画伝（かいしえんがでん）》一集(1679)をつくり，ついで兄の王蓍（おうし），弟の王臬（おうげつ）とともに蘭竹梅菊･花鳥･草虫画を内容とする二･三集(1701)を編集した。
