The metamorphosis of terrestrial invertebrates has been studied in detail in insects. Regardless of whether pterygota (worms) are included in the category of insects, insect metamorphosis is broadly classified into ametametaboly (no metamorphosis, epimetabolism), incomplete metamorphosis (hemimetaboly), and holometaboly (holometabolism). (1) Ametametaboly Ametametaboly insects include the orders Collembola (springtails), Protoceratops (spiders), Hymenoptera (worms), and Thymidia (worms) of the subclass Aptera, and they reach adulthood with no changes in body shape except for the external reproductive organs.
