Eucken, Walter
Born: January 17, 1891, Jena
[Died] March 20, 1950, London German economist. Son of philosopher R. Eucken. After graduating from the University of Berlin and the University of Tübingen, he served as professor of economics at the University of Freiburg from 1927 onwards. In March 1950, he was invited by the University of London to travel to England, where he died of illness. He maintained an interest in theoretical economics in Germany, where the historical school and political economy were influential, and promoted the liberal policy ideas he had held for a long time through the yearbook "Ordo", which he himself founded. His ideas on the market economy became the influential guiding principle of West German economic policy after World War II. He was one of the central figures of neo-liberalism. His major works include The Essence of National Economics (Nationalökonomie-Wozu?) (1938), The Foundations of National Economics (Die Grundlagen der Nationalökonomie) (40), and Principles of Economic Policy (Grundsätze der Wirtschaftspolitik) (52).
