It is a port city in South Hamgyong Province, North Korea, facing the Sea of Japan. The port is a natural harbor with Mayang Island surrounding it four kilometers in front. The bay has calm waves, and the white sandy seabed is a spawning ground for pollock (Alaska pollock). During the fishing season, large schools of pollock flock here, making it North Korea's largest pollock fishing base. There is a canning factory, a fishery processing plant, a fisheries research institute, and a shipyard.
