A marine fish of the genus Carangidae and family Carangidae in the order Perciformes (illustration), in which all fins, not just the tail, are red when raw. It is shaped and sized like a mackerel and can reach a total length of 40 cm. It is found in shallow to deep waters south of central Honshu. It is fished and caught in fixed nets. It is also called Oaka (Tokyo, Wakayama), Akamuro (Wakayama, Kochi), and Akaaji (Kagoshima). Small ones are called Akamentai in Wakayama. 尾だけでなく,すべてのひれが生時には赤い,スズキ目アジ科ムロアジ属の海産魚(イラスト)。サバのような形と大きさをしており,全長40cmに達する。本州中部以南の浅所から深所まで分布。釣られたり,定置網にも入る。オアカ(東京,和歌山),アカムロ(和歌山,高知),アカアジ(鹿児島)などとも呼ばれる。また小さいものを和歌山でアカメンタイという。ムロアジ類は干物にすることが多いが,この種は鮮魚で食用とし,干物にはしない。
