In 1831, Iida Shinshichi founded Takashimaya, a cotton merchant, in Karasuma, Kyoto. In 1855, it became a kimono merchant. In 1909, it became Takashimaya Iida General Partnership, and in 1919, it became Takashimaya Kimono Store Co., Ltd., a Kansai-based department store that adopted its current name in 1930. It is a long-established department store on a par with Mitsukoshi. It has 14 stores, including the Shinjuku store that opened in 1996, in Osaka, Tokyo, Kyoto, Sakai, Wakayama, etc. In 1996, it merged with its subsidiary Yokohama Takashimaya and other stores. Since then, it has been the top in the industry in terms of sales. Head office is in Osaka.
