Ternate Island (English spelling) Pulau Ternate
A small island in the northern part of the Maluku Islands in eastern Indonesia. It has an area of 106 km2 and a population of about 70,000. It is adjacent to the west coast of Halmahera Island and is dominated by a 1,745m-high cone-shaped volcano. It has been known since ancient times as a source of cloves, an important spice, and was a popular destination for foreign merchants. In the early modern period, an Islamic kingdom ruled by a sultan was established, but from the late 16th century it became a territory contested by Spain, Portugal, and then the Netherlands, and finally became a territory of the Dutch East India Company in 1683.
