An old city facing the Sea of Japan in southwestern Akita Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. The central town, located near the mouth of the Koyoshi River, developed as a castle town of the Honjo Domain during the Edo period and serves as the commercial center of the surrounding rural areas. The Uetsu Main Line runs through the city, and the Yuri Kogen Railway branches off here. In March 2005, it merged with the towns of Yajima, Iwaki, Yuri, Nishime, Chokai, Higashiyuri, and Ouchi in Yuri County to form Yurihonjo City. 188.31 km2 . Population: 45,129 (2003).
